“It’s really helped with my relationship with children who are not always on track all the time, who are not model students…it helped me to be able to identify what their actual problem is, rather than just focusing on the output or their behaviour, trying to focus on what the routes of that behaviour is and therefore fostering a good relationship with them and finding a way forward. I think that’s where it’s had the biggest impact.” January 2016 evaluation report
This Place2Be programme has been subsidised by a charitable grant reducing its costs significantly for teachers attending here in Southwark. The programme offers a unique package of mental health awareness training and support for teaching staff, and has a particular focus on early-career teachers.
This programme is aimed at classteachers. The programme boosts teachers’ confidence and enhances their understanding of children’s emotional wellbeing, ultimately improving classroom management, management of personal stress and thus the overall effectiveness of their teaching.
Participants attend four half-day workshops over the course of the academic year and an additional two (from a possible four) confidential consultation sessions. The consultation sessions - known as Place2Think - allow participants the chance to review the behaviour of individual children and young people they work with. They provide practical strategies for dealing with challenging or concerning behaviour. Each session lasts around 90 minutes and takes place with a group of up to six participants.
The programme is led by a fully qualified Place2Be mental health expert.
