Challenge the Gap is a national whole school improvement programme developed by Challenge Partners. The programme aims to narrow the gap between pupil premium children and their peers, through a team of staff developing innovative projects to improve attainment for a targeted group of their pupils.
Who is it for?
Challenge the Gap is a programme for schools who are looking to improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in their school by improving the effectiveness of their pupil premium spending. Secondary schools select 1 leader, 3 teachers and 2 para-professionals to take part in the programme. Primary schools select 1 leader, 1 teacher and 1 para-professional to take part.
A strategic, evidence-based model that works
Each team learns how to develop, trial and scale up effective, tailored strategies to benefit disadvantaged pupils in their context, using the latest research, best practice and emerging innovation.
The starting line - Programme launch; building relationships; identifying common issues to tackle; establishing a baseline of pupil data.
A deep dive into pupil data - What does the research say? What are the programme themes and why are they important? What does your data tell us about your target pupils? Identifying what needs to be done at your school and planning for the year.
The Academically Competent Learner - Building academic literacy, academic numeracy or critical thinking in the classroom (focus area chosen based on local needs).
The Self-Aware Learner - Developing Metacognition in the classroom; leading change for your target pupils.
The Resilient Learner - Building resilience in and out of the classroom; leading change across your school.
The 13 schools participating this year are already reporting a positive impact, with one participating teacher remarking “The change was remarkable: after one session of quality time with a parent, the child’s day was dramatically different - better behaved, more focussed and showing a genuine desire to learn.”
